A Cobleskill-Richmondville Education Foundation grant is giving students at Ryder Elementary the opportunity to explore new books all by themselves.

Using CREF grant funds, the Ryder library purchased “early readers,” which are titles written for students who are in the early stages of learning to read. Within two days of acquiring the books, more than half had been checked out by students!

“One kindergartener asked me for a book she could try to read herself, and I was able to immediately recommend a book I bought with the grant funds (“Big Cat,” by Ethan Long),” said Ms. Winters, the library media specialist at Ryder. “The smile on her face was enormous when she was able to read the first page of the book aloud!  These books are definitely already boosting students' confidence.”

The Ryder staff extends its sincerest appreciation to CREF for funding the books.
