Middle school and high school students in the Liberty Partnerships Program spent the day at SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday, March 16 to attend a career fair, listen to an incredible keynote speaker, learn leadership skills and more.

Professional wrestler and handicapped hero Zach Gowen started off the day with a keynote speech about his journey from childhood cancer survivor and amputee, to professional wrestler. Gowen’s speech was the perfect introduction to the day’s theme: “Don’t Quit Your Day Dream.”

After hearing from Gowen, sixth through eighth grade students spent time with the senior class of Youth as Leaders from the Schoharie County Youth Bureau. The Youth as Leaders seniors led students through cooperative games and activities to build their leadership skills.

Ninth through 12th grade students attended a career fair with representatives from over 30 career industries including healthcare, law enforcement, emergency services, graphic arts, early childhood education, canine management, real estate, social services, information technology, manufacturing, athletics and more.

Juniors and seniors also had the opportunity to participate in a budgeting workshop with financial aid experts.

LPP is a program designed to establish relationships with institutions of higher education to deliver research-based programming to students identified as being at a higher risk of dropping out of school.
