C-R senior Sam Rogers has spent her senior year participating in the New Visions: Pathways in Education program, a program designed to prepare students for a career in the field of education.

Sam recently wrapped up a project proposing a Free Food Fridge by presenting their work to an audience of superintendents, principals and other administrators from their districts.

The students brainstormed projects they’d like to see implemented in their schools that would have a positive impact on the district and completed research to determine why the project would benefit students and how the project would be implemented.

Sam and her classmates proposed Free Food Fridges at each of their high schools to combat food insecurity. In the proposal, students suggested any student in the high school would have access to the fridge, which would be stocked with nutritional sealed food items donated by students, families, local businesses, and/or local farms.

Sam researched the logistics of getting the Free Food Fridge up and running, including acquiring a refrigerator; liabilities associated with the project; and how to make the project sustainable long-term.

New Visions: Pathways in Education is a half-day program for seniors on the University at Albany campus. Students work with UAlbany faculty and complete college level courses each semester.

Sam plans to attend SUNY Oneonta to study Early Childhood Education with a concentration in Mathematics in the fall.
